New Free Tax Assistance Partnership Delivers $1 Million Boost to the Community
Saratoga Springs, NY - Two long-standing local organizations have joined forces to provide a vital financial lifeline to the community. Through a new partnership, the Franklin Community Center and Saratoga Central Catholic School launched the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, offering free tax preparation to low-income families, seniors, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency.
In its inaugural season, the program assisted nearly 500 clients, generating an economic impact of over $1 million for the area.
The VITA program provides a safe, convenient, and free alternative to paid tax services. The initiative is powered by a dedicated team of 10 IRS-certified volunteers from the Franklin Community Center working alongside 22 students from Saratoga Catholic.
“The typical family with children saved hundreds of dollars in preparation fees and received an average refund of $4,500. That puts hard-earned money back in the pockets of those who need it most,” said Francoise Thomas, senior tax preparer. “For many families, this refund is the largest single check they receive all year, providing an immediate and essential benefit. It helps cover rent, fix the car, and catch up on bills.”
The program’s success relies on the commitment of volunteers who contribute their time to strengthen the community. “Knowing we made a real impact was the ultimate reward,” said Paige Bujno, a senior at Saratoga Catholic. Her classmate, Noel Jukonski, added, “The free training and the support from seasoned preparers make it easy to learn and help clients. I encourage anyone wanting to make a difference to join our program.” Saratoga Catholic is one of only 121 high school VITA programs in the country.
