Windsor Fine Furniture: Comb Back Arm Chair, Comb Back Rocker or Settee with David Abeel. #1308-0808. 3 days.
Join this class to make beautiful functional art that will serve you for many generations to come. Your instructor, David Abeel, will guide you through a three-day journey breaking down what might appear complicated into many smaller doable tasks by introducing you to a variety of tools and work strategies to bring many parts together into a working whole. This course is designed for students from beginning to advanced skill levels. Projects will be well-engineered, very comfortable and styled to fit any decor. Pine, poplar, oak and maple will be used for parts. On Day #1, students will explore sighting lines and drilling angles, shape, boil and bend a comb, fit stretchers and legs and start excavating their seat. They will shape parts using travishers, compass plane, draw knife, spoke shaves and hoop shave. For the Rocker, extra care will be given to rocker elevation in relation to seat line before drilling. On Days #2 and #3, students will finish excavating their seat, shape spindles, mark and drill the comb, balance arms and angles to create balance and symmetry between the chair's many curves and elevations. By the end of class all will be assembled, leveled, glued up and ready for paint or clear finish. All turned parts, tools and other raw materials will be supplied by the instructor.
