ON DECK Saratoga, a project of the not-for-profit Saratoga Institute, produceslocal and regional art and community events that are inspired by the creative
and supportive spirit of skate culture. “I’m a lifelong skater and have travelled to
skateparks around the world, and always been welcomed as a member of their
local community,” said Benj Gleeksman, who heads the project with his wife,
Belinda Colon. “That spirit is something we want to have here in Saratoga, and
that’s why we formed ON DECK organization.” “Skate culture has always been a magnet for creative people, and that’s why we use art, films, music and other arts in our ON DECK projects,” said Colon, the curator and organizer of the Re*gen*er*ate Skateboard Art Show.
ON DECK Saratoga has produced free skateboard jams, movie screenings and art shows, and works closely with he Saratoga Springs Recreation Department to keep the skate park safe and well-maintained, raising funds through projects like the Re*gen*er*ate auction.
The Re*gen*er*ate show features works by over 50 artists – including kids –who decorated skateboard decks in a wide variety of styles and media. An
online auction for the artwork begins at the August 16 event. Participating artists
donate their work free of charge to ON DECK Saratoga, with proceeds going to
skate park programming and maintenance.
