From the mid-1800’s to the mid-1900’s, railroads were a major contributor to the strong economic growth of Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area. Traveling by train, people found it convenient to get to Saratoga, get off at the beautiful downtown Victorian-style station and enjoy the many things the area had to offer. These attractions included the famous Broadway hotels, the many mineral springs, Congress Park, Saratoga Race Course, Canfield Casino and a trip by rail to Mount McGregor. Railroads such as the Delaware & Hudson and the Saratoga, Mount McGregor and Lake George, as well as several other lines that served the area, were all a part of the Saratoga scene. Join Dr. Richard Chait, author (and Distinguished Research Fellow at the National Defense University), as he brings back area images of a bygone era.
