Love's Labour's Lost
The Saratoga Shakespeare Company will celebrate the Saratoga Centennial with a production of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost. The play runs July 21st – August 2nd in Congress Park, Saratoga Springs, on the Alfred Z. Solomon Stage, at 6 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 3 pm Sundays.
Admission is free of charge, and Congress Park is entirely accessible. As always, family groups and picnics are strongly encouraged to attend.
Love’s Labour’s Lost will be directed by Saratoga Shakespeare Company’s Artistic Director, Larry Opitz, and features Saratoga Shakespeare favorites, David Girard, Tim Dugan, and John Romeo. We are happy to welcome back Hillary Parker, and we are thrilled to introduce some wonderful new faces to the company and the capital region, all proud members of Actors’ Equity, the actors’ professional union. In addition, our talented group of apprentices and interns fills the remainder of the cast.
Love’s Labour’s Lost is one of Shakespeare’s somewhat lesser known plays, but one with some of his richest language and one of his sweetest stories of youth and love. Celebrating the centennial of the charter of Saratoga Springs as a city, the production will be set in 1915, incorporating ragtime music and dance and highlighting the fact that Shakespeare isn’t dull and that his plays provide fun-filled experiences expanding our understanding of the human condition. Travel back in time to 1915 and picnic with the company and Shakespeare’s unbeatable genius.
Saratoga Shakespeare Executive Director Barbara Opitz points out that, “Since 2000, our productions have become a Saratoga tradition, and many children have grown up watching Shakespeare every summer.” The company has always taken great pride in presenting Shakespeare’s work with great clarity and in a fun-filled and exciting manner. Last year’s Macbeth excited audiences with a good deal of sword fighting throughout the park.
Saratoga Shakespeare Company is thrilled that Saratoga Arts made this program possible with a 2015 Community Arts Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
