Hang It! All the Hardware to Make your Door Swing and Latch with Peter Ross. #965-0808. 5 days. August 8-12
This class will cover making the basic hardware typically found on an 18th or early 19th century door: hinges and a latch. The hinges will be simple strap hinges with drive pintles. Both forge welded eyes and un welded types will be covered during class and students will have the opportunity to work on both. The latch will be a common Suffolk latch with associated bar, staple and keeper. This is an excellent exercise in careful forging of small material, usually requiring repetition to achieve good results. The latches incorporate a number of basic forging skills such as punching, spreading with the cross pein and swaging in bottom dies. There will also be time devoted to filing and assembly and the skills used in basic surface treatment and simple decoration.
NOTE: Hard shoes and long pants are required for student's safety.
Note: For your safety: no loose fitting clothes, hair tied back, comfortable shoes, and no jewelry. If sensitive to wood dust registration for turning classes is not recommended.
