Hammer Making and the Striker with Patrick Quinn. #1206-0921. 2+1/2 days. Fri. 6pm-9pm. Sat. & Sun. 9am-4pm.
In this class you will run through all the steps involved in making a 2.5 lb forging/rounding hammer. Starting with a chunk of 1045, you will punch and drift the hole, forge the cheeks, and fuller around the face and peen. Most of the work will be done with strikers and sledge hammers. We will focus on proper striking technique. After the hammer is forged, all heat-treating steps will be covered: hardening and tempering, then finishing (sanding and polishing), and, if time allows, handle making. This class is for intermediate smiths.
This class meets on Fri.from 6pm-9pm. and on Sat. & Sun. from 9am-4pm.
NOTE: Hard shoes and long pants are required for student’s safety.
