Grant's Farewell: A Portrayal of Ulysses S. Grant

By the time he arrived at Grant Cottage in June of 1885, the cancer-stricken Ulysses S. Grant had become so debilitated that he had lost the power of speech. He hoped that his Memoirs, which he completed at the Cottage just three days before his death, would speak for him. And there is no doubt that, for the last 125 years, Grant's voice has been heard from every page of that military classic. But the Memoirs' focus was the Civil War. What General Grant was unable to do, because time ran out, was to reflect upon his private life, to thank and pay tribute to the men and women who influenced and inspired him, who mentored him and helped shape him into the soldier and President he became. General Grant never got the chance to say goodbye to everyone he admired and loved. Join us on Saturday, August 27th at 1pm, as General Grant, portrayed by tour guide Steve Trimm, is finally given the opportunity to say farewell. The Grant Cottage is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day Wednesday–Sunday, 10am to 4pm and from Labor Day through Columbus Day, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm. Adults, $5; Seniors (62 & up) $4; All students (ages 6-18) $4; 6 & Under: Free. Group rate available for groups of 10 or more: $3.00.
