History lecture
Starting with the arrival of Gideon Putnam, Saratoga Springs was founded and became the number one health destination in the 1800’s because of its cold water mineral springs. Saratoga evolved quickly from a pine forest to a world-class resort as a result of these mineral springs. This area became the summer destination for many thousands of Americans seeking the curative properties of those waters, as well as the social activities that were offered in the city. Though greatly overlooked today, our mineral springs have a very interesting story to tell as our number one asset.Come hear local tour expert, Charlie Kuenzel, discuss the geology, chemistry, location and impact of these mineral springs on the city and the members of society that traveled to the greatest resort destination of the Victorian era.
This event is conducted in the Dutcher Community Room located on the main floor of the library and is free.Tea and coffee are provided. For more information please contact the Visitor Center at 518-587-3241.
