Rochmon Record Club moves to Caffe Lena
The Sturm und Drang of Jethro Tull’s 1971 hard rock milestone Aqualung is the focus of the 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 18 Rochmon Record Club Listening Party at legendary Phila Street coffeehouse Caffe Lena. Chuck “Rochmon” Vosganian has been hosting monthly classic rock listening parties at Washington Street’s Universal Preservation Hall since September 2016. With a talk on Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishman establishing the model, Vosganian—a respected area sound man and frequent contractor with UPH—carefully researches each album he highlights, with a goal of informing and deepening understanding of the history of individual performers, songs and stories that make up iconic albums of the 1960s and 70s. Discussion follow each presentation. UPH Campaign Manager Teddy Foster says, “We have built something with Rochmon Record Club that is unique and fun. Chuck does an extremely professional job and brings an enthusiasm to the subject that is infectious. We didn’t want the listening parties to end while we are in renovation, so I spoke to Executive Director Sarah Craig at Caffe Lena and she was extremely receptive to the idea.” Vosganian says, “Rochmon is a complete labor of love for me. I created it as a multimedia event that owes a debt to shows like VH1’s Behind the Music and Ultimate Albums, which told the tale of great records and artists. Every album I research puts me right back on my parent’s couch, sitting between two speakers, listening intently, reading every liner note and learning everything I could.” “When Teddy said I could use UPH for the shows, it was a gift from the creative community in Saratoga. When Sarah said we could continue, without skipping a beat, at Caffe Lena, it was another gift from the same creative community. I could not be happier!” Aqualung is Tull’s most popular album, featuring rock standards like the title track, “Locomotive Breath” and “Hymn 43.” It is often considered a concept album, even though bandleader and principle songwriter Ian Anderson disagrees. In keeping with the spirit of Rochmon Record Club, patrons will listen and decide!
