Participants will investigate methods for depicting the natural elements of water, sky, and land in watercolor. The wet-in wet method will be emphasized for establishing compositions and atmospheric effects. Additional methods are introduced for establishing structure and emphasis. Techniques will be examined in light of their implications for expressing personal interpretations of natural phenomena. Chosen subjects can be rendered from photographic references, imagination, and the landscape around the Folk School itself (weather permitting). The instructor will provide photos of natural elements for references and participants may bring photos as well. Each day will begin with short demonstrations of technique and possible compositional strategies alternating with short periods for individual practice that will highlight their overall usefulness for varying the content and feeling one wishes to convey. The afternoons will allow a block of time for development of a finished work.
NOTE: Those who have their own watercolor supplies may use them. Watercolor paper of varying sizes will be available for cost and some paints will also be available for sale. A necessary supply list will be available on request.
