R. Paul McCarty was appointed the Historian of the Town and Village of Fort Edward in 1975 and served as public historian since then. In his 40 years as the Town and Village Historian, Paul has been dedicated to telling the history and preserving the past of Fort Edward and the surrounding areas. In 1975, Paul recognized the importance of Solomon Northup of Twelve Years A Slave and Northup's residence at the Old Fort House. His talk will focus on Northup's life in the Fort Edward area and his subsequent kidnapping from Saratoga Springs where he and his wife were working. It will examine Northup's experience as a slave in Louisiana, and his eventual return to the area after his freedom was secured in 1853.
