For millennia blacksmiths have forged iron into many useful items. Integral to their shape is the transition from one cross section to another; often in a way that is both graceful and structural. This class will explore traditional 18th century forging with an emphasis on the transitions necessary in order to have structurally sound work. In addition, we will explore the various ways a shape can be forged out and the "set-up" necessary to forge shapes. Students can choose from a variety of items to make, challenging both intermediate and advanced smiths. Examples of multiple items, from hardware to hearth equipment will be available for students to examine and handle.
