Talk on Harrison Tyrell
Grant Cottage tour guide, Steve Trimm, will tell the fascinating story of Harrison Tyrell, an African American who played a vital role in the last 18 months of the dying President’s life. Born a slave, Tyrell not only was one of Ulysses S. Grant’s closest companions, but also the father of a Harvard University graduate who was appointed the first black Municipal Court Judge in Washington D.C. Trimm will share Tyrell’s story–one that many journalists of his time overlooked because he was an African American.
