Democracy is founded on robust dialogue, but somewhere along the line, politics replaced sex as the one thing in America we don’t discuss in mixed company—even amongst friends and family. Bring it to The Table is a documentary film and community engagement campaign aimed at engaging students in civic action and empowering them to take an active role in breaking down hyper-partisanship. Skidmore College, with the sponsorship of the Associate Dean of the Faculty, the Faculty Director of Civic Engagement, the John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative, Intergroup Relations, and the Department of Social Work, joins colleges and universities across the country that will be screening the film and hosting the interactive events this fall. Talking Eyes Media (TEM) launched Bring it to The Table to reclaim the rightful place of healthy discourse by encouraging people to listen to each other and collaboratively move towards action. The Bring it to The Table documentary film is one component of the interactive campaign. The screening will be followed by a live “Table Talk” event with filmmaker Julie Winokur where there will be interactive dialogue with selected members of the audience who will be encouraged to explore their own belief systems while listening to the complex reasoning behind their fellow citizens’ ideas.
