SUMMARY:Saratoga Reads! Adult Book Discussion - 02/09/2012
DESCRIPTION:Saratoga Reads! Adult Book DiscussionSaratoga Reads! Adult Book Discussion\nPlease join Saratoga Reads! for a discussion of our 2012 book choice\, The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks\, by Rebecca Skloot. The widely acclaimed nonfiction work tells the story of an African American woman who sought treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. During treatment\, and without her consent\, samples of her cancer tissue were taken for medical and scientific experimentation. For 60 years\, cells reproduced from those samples have been used worldwide in medical research\, yet Henrietta Lacks has remained virtually unknown and many of her family members have lived in poverty. Issac Pulver\, Director of the Saratoga Springs Public Library\, and Mary Heidorn\, Saratoga Springs High School English Teacher\, will lead the discussion. The event will be held from 6:45 to 8:00 on Thursday\, February 9th at the Higher Grounds Caffe\, located within the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Refreshments will be available for purchase. As always\, this event is free and open to the public.
