Through his use of light and strongly cast shadows\, the artist instilled his subjects with a sense of drama creating an aura of expectation and impending change. Shadows are a recurrent motif in Hopper's work and part of its power to enthrall viewers\, emphasizing the sense of alienation\, anonymity\, and isolation of the human condition. While we are only peripherally conscious of shadows in nature\, this exhibition will demonstrate how they assume a narrative and metaphoric dimension in the work of Hopper and his contemporaries\, including George Bellows\, Armin Landeck\, Martin Lewis\, Louis Lozowick\, Isabel Bishop\, Howard Cook\, and Stow Wengenroth. Emerging from the Shadows will present three watercolors and two etchings by Hopper\, including his iconic print Night Shadows\, and twenty additional works by ten of his fellow artists\, primarily etchings and lithographs on loan from museums\, private collections\, and selected from The Hyde’s permanent collection.
